Snubbed by The View, Barbara Walters selects Sherri Shepherd

September 6th, 2007 · 6 Comments

Latinos make up about 14.5% of the US household population. There are almost 42 million of us in the USA. Barbara Walters picked another View castmate this week, and in doing so, snubbed the growing presence of Latinas in the American fabric. I don’t watch this show very often, but now I feel less inclined to tune in when it is on. Whose “view” is it anyway? I could think of a handful of Latinas who I would like to see on such a forum. Perhaps Giselle Fernandez or Jackie Guerra. Or maybe an unknown or fresh out of college Latina? At this point in US population trends, we have a larger presence than African-Americans, but we are still underrepresented in leadership positions and even televised forums. Now, I know nothing about Sherri Shepherd. She might be a great addition, and I do like Whoopi Goldberg. She usually makes intelligent observations, but wouldn’t it be nice to have another perspective? It looks like I’m not the only one balking about this latest move by network television.

You’re surprised? Barbara Walters and the show’s producers probably have media data that plays on negative stereotypical impressions of Latinos. I am sure the performance of the U.S. Congressional Latino Caucus, and our local politicians in Southern California have further reinforced all those negative stereotypes. So much so that Network Television believes that show is too intellectual for our analytical consumption.

I don’t know the reason for not having a Latina…but, their loss…especially when Nielsen just including Latinos in the mainstream.

No consolation and no excuse for ABC but NBC is creating their own version of the View called Today’s Fourth Hour.

Their hosts? Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb.

Much more diverse group. Let’s just hope they can hold their own.
