Today I have a little more faith in humanity and in “democracy”

January 4th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Twenty years after Jesse Jackson won 11 primaries becoming at the time the most formidable black presidential candidate in history, Senator Barack Obama won the Iowa Caucuses with 38% of likely convention delegates.

For the Dems, the final stats from Iowa are as follows:

Obama  38%

Edwards 30%

Clinton 29%

The only Latino presidential candidate came in fourth and plans to continue campaigning. Senators Biden and Dodd are leaving the race. Considering that Hillary Clinton has a well oiled political campaign machine, I’m pleasantly surprised with the results in Iowa, one of the whitest and most homogeneous states in the union. Hopefully, the healthy competition will continue.

The fat lady hasn’t sang yet. Remember what happened to Howard Dean!

Actually, Howard Dean placed third in the Iowa caucuses in ’04. He was behind John Kerry and John Edwards. Dean also finished second in the New Hampshire primary. Dean then went on to lose Wisconsin, and I believe that the only primary that he won was Vermont. We shall see though.

My favorite of the day was by Ari Emanuel, who said, “The instant Barack Obama is elected president. That instant, the world will look at us differently.” I like that idea.

If Barack Obama hasn’t joined the Council on Foreign Relations yet, that’s unlikely to happen. However, that possibility has a nice ring to it.
