Too beautiful to not share – Lola la Grande singing!

June 21st, 2008 · 3 Comments

I will be bringing you more political oriented blog articles this weekend, but for now, I want to share this YouTube video with you of the great ranchera singer Lola Beltrán. She died about 12 years ago, but she was world renowned and performed in front of dignitaries such as Charles de Gaulle, Yugoslavian leader Josip Broz Tito, Prime Minister Breznev, Queen Elizabeth II, and U.S. Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. While discussing who has inspired her, Linda Ronstadt has said, “The female singer that influenced me the most was a Mexican singer named Lola Beltrán. And she is the queen of all, she is it, she’s like what Billie Holliday is to us and Edith Piaf is to France.” Play the clip, and you will see why she her artistry was so respected and loved. She makes all of the current Mexican pop princesses look like amateurs.

La Grande’s influence on Ronstadt is very evident — almost all the songs in Linda’s two mariachi songs were recorded by la Grande and Linda sang them as close as she could to la Grande’s voice.

The video you posted is a great example of Lola’s skills, but I think the greatest examples of her skills are her recordings of “Huapango torero” and “Cuando dos almas”. The fact that Lola is accompanied by Mariachi Vargas helps a lot.
