Personally, I couldn't stand more than 5minutes of her speech or from any othe RNC speaker for that matter. I kept wondering when they were going to flash JC Watts picture on the screen.

I do, however, agree that Dr. Acuna states the obvious. The monochromatic picture from the RNC was no TV malfunction. I have yet to hear a single comment that was directed towards my Mexican ears(naturalized US Citizen since 1989).
And no, I did not benefit from Reagan's Amnesty. All he did was cut my university aid every year I was enrolled. I was only a teenager back in the early 80's and no where as politically saavy as I am now, but I saw right through the dog-and-pony show that the Reagan Administration was.

To elect someone on their looks is absurd and counterproductive as in making the mistake of voting for a coconut. The candidates who appeals to me and my family's needs usually ends up getting my vote.

EYES OF TEXAS: I'm a White Panamanian and I voted for Balbina Herrera (triguena) over Juan-Carlos Navarro (blanco) in the recent PRD primaries, so I don't know what you're on about.

@ EVERYBODY: I generally like Americans, although I only went to college and grad school there and in "Blue States," but there is something especially goofy about some Republicans, the men especially. I see this with American businessmen down here all the time. Ask them how they feel about the wars and they can't go on enough about how "we're winning" and "we took out Saddam Hussein" and all that. But EVERY TIME I invite them to go to the fights, they refuse because boxing's "too violent"!

The way it always has been and always will be with you folks. It's never about the issues or the better candidate, it's all about someone who looks like you. Tell me thats not racist to the max. This isn't about who looks like who, but about electing those who are most qualified.

Aong time ago a Latino friend who is also a conservative Republican idealogue asked me why I was a Democrat( a far left leaning one at that). I told him the decision came to me easily. As a young person watching my first National conventions I noticed that at the GOP convention there were no faces that looked like mine, while at the Democratic convention I noticed not only faces that looked like me, but also black, yellow , and red. Soooo, why do I want to join a party that doesn't want me, or people like me. Professor Acuna is right on!!!!!

At our new blog, Conforming Dissent, we are interested in the political ruminations of the Latino community, which in my opinion, has a crucial role to play in this election.

Please note how extreme party loyalty has marginalized the black voice in the Democrat Party today. I personally believe it is important to both criticize and praise both sides, as appropriate.

The immigration issue is a complex one and there are no easy answers. A sovereign country is obligated to its citizens to defend its borders but has just as strong a moral obligation to the international community to pursue its security in ways that are not discriminatory or inhumane. The United States is presently failing on both accounts and both political parties share significant blame.

Good work and insightful commentary going on in this blog. I have added a link to it from ours and will check back frequently for information relevant to the Latino community. Thank you.

Michael,

No one pretends to be WASP. I do take responsibility for my actions though. I dont rely on a party to rescue me. This is why I decline to state a party and vote on the issues.

If I sided with a party along ideological lines I would be opening myself to the psychology of poverty. I will not allow any party to tell me that I need government to help me. We are here to rule government, not the other way around.

Let me tell you something, you can continue to play the poor, chicano victim, but the world revolves around one color: GREEN.

To quote Bill Clinton, "it's the economy, stupid." As long as we have free markets in a global world, a racist has lots to risk if he protects his business from outsiders.

When you start playing with taxes you give people incentive to be more selective about who they choose to do business with. Not to mentione that the social programs that empower, turn into cyclical traps of dependent, poor people...

Hmmmm sound familiar...

What is it about the GOP that seems to turn all its supporters in shameless liars? Are they so dependent on Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly for all their facts that they are too lazy to look them up for themselves? Why do the coconuts who embrace GOP ideals wholeheartedly absorb that “Denial Mentality?” Do they actually believe the GOP has become colorblind? Do they actual believe the core of the Republican Party is going to regard them as equals? The Republican Party stood in the way of Civil Rights legislation for nearly fifty years before it was passed into law. And since 1964 that hasn’t changed. And you have benefited greatly from Civil Rights legislation. Pretending you’re a WASP doesn’t mean the rest of the world is going to treat you as one. Wake up and embrace what you are. Wallowing in ignorance is not a flattering trait. All you are doing is conforming to the WASP stereotype that you are too dumb to see the forest through the trees.

Edward Moreno,

I don't know where you are getting your facts, but Obama voted in support of comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate. Read about it here on this non-partisan issue site:

http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Immigration.htm

McCain is now saying that he would not support the bill that has his name on it with Senator Kennedy. Why is McCain stepping away from immigration reform, while Obama is supporting it?

I don't know about Dr. Acuna, so I won’t comment on him personally. I will say that I don't understand his criticism of the RNC. This is the same question I have for Latinos.

Democrats are the union party that stands in the way of immigrants because they are competition for jobs. Let me remind people that the last big amnesty law was signed by Ronald Reagan in 1986, which I am sure many of you have benefited from.

Let me also rewind the clock to 2007. Barack Obama voted against the Immigration Reform Act that would have given amnesty to immigrants and access to legalization and SS.

Last thing I recalled, McCain was the originator of the bill that then became the John McCain-Edward Kennedy Immigration bill. Then Mr. Obama voted against it.

All I can say is that the Latino community needs to move on from this belief that party allegiance brings empowerment. Do not let good words fool you. The actions of the candidate count more.

McCain 2008!

Dr. Rudy is dead nuts on! My spouse and I sat down for an evening of RNC watching. We watched La Senora Palin provide the RNC delegates with a rabble rousing speech. It energized the crowd and won her lavish praise from most media commentators from both sides of the political spectrum.

She was peddling being an "ah..shucks" small town girl, who has been thrust into publice service by her intensive desire to right the wrongs and reform government. ...Ah yes, the american mythology of the reluctant hero.

For our familia, it was obvious we were not her intended audience. Listening to Senora Palin reminded me of the same tired nostalgia laden formula the republican party sells to their base.

Even as the delegates cheered and jeered along with Senora Palin, i could help but feel sorry for most of the people there. Most were older, white americanss. Also, there seemed to be a fair number of veterans judging from VFW and AL covers.

These folks are the party faithful and have to spend a significant amount of their own time and money to attend these political functions ( I know, I was a dem state delegate and it is money making scam...but that is a different topic).

By allowing themselves to get manipulated year after year by so-called conservative movement and its pandering bedfellow..the GOP.

They are spending a great deal of their life in anger and frustration wishing to change government to a past that never was...for that matter never will be.

Though the RNC speeches were partisan and hostile attack on the dems in general and obama/Biden in particular, the speakers did not reveal what this latest troop of leaders is going to do different from the past years of controling the white house, supreme court and 14 of last 16 years of Congress...
