Wrap up post — The Latinos in Congress this week!

November 20th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Meet the new Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Nydia Velazquez from NY’s 12th Congressional District. She replaced “Working Joe” Baca as the chair of this ‘oh so influential’ congressional committee. She was unanimously elected. I wonder if Linda and Loretta Sanchez will come back to the CHC now that Joe Baca is no longer the jefe in charge. Congresswoman Velazquez is rockin’ the cholita eyebrows in this pic, but let’s give her the benefit of the doubt. This Caucus needs more than a makeover. Maybe she will channel her inner chola and fight harder and smarter for us than did “Working Joe.”

As for the rest of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez is the next vice chair, Rep. Hilda Solis will serve as second vice chair and Rep. John Salazar is the whip.

In other congressional news, Rep. Xavier Becerra was elected vice chairman by House Democrats. He is the only Latino on the Congressional Democratic party leadership team. Congrats to Congressman Becerra. And Rep. Raul Grijalva was elected co-chair of the House Progressive Caucus, where he pledges to, “to move (the CPC) to the next level and continue to advance our progressive agenda in an effective and pragmatic manner.” Onward with your progressive self, Congressman Grijalva!

This is definitely a step in the right direction. However, who is she going to lead? With the exception of Hilda Solis and Raul Grijalva, the rest of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus is pretty much dead weight. They’re nothing but a bunch of wannabe jefes with no agenda other than to collect their fat checks and plan the next gala. If Howard Dean really wants to outline future plans to truly bring about change and accountability in the Democratic Party, he should begin by targeting replacements for the majority of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Congresswoman Velasquez was one of the few Latina women who spoke at the DNC, and was a co-chair to the Obama campaign. I love her story and rise to power, she will be a great leader and hopefuly a motivating change to the CHC.

Is it really necessary to talk about her eyebrows? Why is a female politician’s appearance always used to diminish her?

You didn’t make one comment about Raul Grijalva’s appearance.

Why don’t you accord female polticians the same respect.

What’s wrong with talking about the eyebrows? I’m not diminishing this politician’s appearance. It is simply an observation. She might like her brows… I have seen pictures where her brows were more full, and she did look better in my opinion:

When you are representing your community, I think that you should try to look your best and that goes for the men too.

People make an issue out of Hillary’s pant suits, headbands, hair color, etc. We are visual by nature. Some say that Obama is too skinny.

As for Grijalva… he looks like a brown teddy bear. We can critique his appearance if you want to… what do you think? It looks like he colors his hair too since his beard has more grey. Que piensas?

What’s with the eyebrows crack? You really do a disservice to latinos with these petty quips. You should be embarassed of the blatant sexism of this post. Ugh. For a moment there I was thrilled to find this site.
