Activism Alert: Here’s what you can do to help Rep. Raul Grijalva!

December 7th, 2008 · 19 Comments

Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), one of the great conservationists in Congress, is one of the leading candidates for Secretary of the Interior. Grijalva is a strong supporter of endangered species, he also gets high marks for animal welfare issues. He’s a champion of immigration reform and has the cojones to stand up to President George W. Bush by supporting a resolution to censure him. He would be an excellent choice for this job. In the running with him is Congressman Mike Thompson, who comes from the NRA and has strong corporate ties plus the backing of House Speaker Pelosi. I would rather have the guy with the strong environmental connections. Corporate America certainly hasn’t been on the side of the environment as history shows, although there are some great green companies moving in that direction in recent years.

If you need more convincing, Roberto Lovato wrote an excellent piece summing up Grijalva’s qualifications on the Huffington Post. Please read it! And then visit Barack Obama’s change.gov site, and leave a message for the energy and environment team expressing support for Congressman Raul Grijalva.

Update 12/09: 130 environmental groups have signed a letter endorsing Congressman Grijalva for the Secretary of the Interior position. Let’s not let the momentum stop.

Wow. What a horrible candidate. I should leave a message in opposition of this horrible candidate. Kudos to Obama if he refuses to appoint him.

And why is he such a horrible choice? Is it because he doesn’t attend your church, and is anti Wal-Mart? Or is he too brown for your taste?

This is the only male in the U.S. Congressional Hispanic Caucus that does any real work. And the vast amount of that legislation is environmentally based. Six months ago he saved the Grand Canyon from uranium mining with a clever legislative tactic last used by Stewart Udall in the 1960s. This is a Congressman we can all be proud of. He has used his elected office to protect the environment, the downtrodden, and those entities without lobbyists. Of course Nancy Pelosi doesn’t want to promote Raul Grijalva. She only wants to promote Congressional representatives with extensive ties to the Fortune 500.

Mike Thompson will be the James Watt of the Obama Administration. He will undermine any efforts to promote Green within the U.S. protected lands. We should always question any direction Nancy Pelosi wants to steer political influence. This Speaker of the House advocated giving trillions of your tax dollars with Wall Street, and is about to give billions of your tax dollars to Detroit. All this welfare to obscenely wealthy people reeks of out and out theft to citizens who were robbed by these very same people, and are now struggling to survive. But that is what Nancy Pelosi is. I am always surprised that a progressive community like San Francisco continually re-elects this Corporate American lackey. Are they too busy to open their eyes?

Appoint Raul Grijalva to be the next Secretary of the Interior. Give that office a conscience and a purpose, instead of putting the traditional congressional whore who will enrich himself by providing access to the multinational oil and mining industry.

We don’t need to trash anyone else over this appointment. There IS no one of Grijalva’s caliber in the running. Honest, hardworking, he GETS it. And like someone said, has the cajones to stand up and do the right thing time after time. Not a grandstander, just dependable for all la gente, for our common heritage as people and our futures — black, white, brown, red, yellow and everything in between. Make our country proud, Barack!!

Just did it,hopefully we can pull this off!

Just the fact that Nancy Pelosi is pushing Mike Thompson for DOI should give the Obama Administration pause. There is no one more qualified than Raul Grijalva to run this department. This would send a message to Congress that meritocracy is now the rule of thumb in choosing our leaders.

Mike Thompson is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, the conservative wing of the Democratic Party. In other words, they are somewhat enlightened Republicans who haven’t broken quite completely with racial politics, abortion, stem-cell research, or gay rights. Loretta Sanchez and Joe Baca are a part of this group which should automatically pop up red flags. Remember Loretta Sanchez campaigned loudly at the Democratic Convention in favor of Hillary Clinton, when it was obvious the vast majority of the party was already moving forward with Barack Obama. Based on this association, and his possible ties to the energy industry through the NRA, Raul Grijalva would be a more effective manager of the DOI, than Mike Thompson. And his record as a legislator involving environmental issues firmly confirms this.

Cabinet appointments are made with definite focus and calculation: It is presumed that the corporate interests and others that see Mike Thompson as the one who could be trusted to oversee the Interior Department while protecting their interest and they are working like beavers to get him the nod for the top Interior job. Hence, one can only imagine the churn being put out, but one would also hope that the Latino and conservation advocacy groups along with the Hispanic Congressional caucus are in full throttle to get Raul Grijalva appointed Secretary of Interior.

The last Latino in that job was Manuel Lujan under Bush 41. He was amiable but totally ineffective and merely presided over the department’s functions so no policy initiatives were ever noted. If Grijalva has the testosterone to do good on the conservation side, but also bring some imaginative thinking into this most parochial department..the issues of Native Americans in the BIA, the drilling on public lands, off shore drilling, protection of the national parks system and the oversight of the US trust territories like in the Pacific: Mariana Islands, the Chamorro islands, and countless other Pacific islands and atolls as well as the Virgin Islands. Grijalva appears to have the ‘right stuff,’ but does he get the sufficient top cover from the Hispanic Congressional caucus and advocacy groups? And does Obama listen and make the right decision?

If Raul Grijalva has to depend on the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for help to get the DOI nod, he’s dead in the water. The Hispanic Caucus is only interested in gala dinners and financing Joe Baca’s children’s political campaigns. And MALDEF and NCLR operate on the same self-serving priorities. Hopefully, Obama and those around him can see the light through the trees and push him in the direction of favoring Raul Grijalva for this DOI position.

Grijalva is s Democratic racist Tan Klansman who doesn’t lift a finger to stop Illegal Alien chuntes from dumping millions of pounds of their trash at our southern border while breaking our reasonable, fair, humane, and just immigration laws…NOT a good pick.
