Back when we blogged about Congresswoman Linda Sanchez’s announcement of her out of wedlock pregnancy, I was thinking that from the political angle, it probably wasn’t the best move. Sure enough, her communications director has been putting out small fires related to her pregnancy status as some have unwisely compared Ms. Sanchez’s situation to that of the mom of the new octuplets, Nadya Suleman. Clearly, the situations of Ms. Suleman and Ms. Sanchez are very different, but the common thread is that both women are unwed. If Ms. Sanchez were private citizen Sanchez, I don’t think that people would really care about her marital status. Sure, there are many wonderful single moms who are successful and thriving. But the flip side, at least in the Latino community, is that we have a growing rate of out of wedlock births with babies being born into situations much more dire than any that the new little Sanchez will probably ever have to face. Unfortunately, most of us don’t earn $174K per year and have wonderful federally funded health benefits.
You can see for yourself here the issue that Congresswoman Sanchez’s communications director, Marsha Catron, is having to address. In responding to the piece about multiple births and single mothers, the communications director says that Ms. Sanchez has an “unofficial fiancé,” which was referred to in the original LA Times article in which she announced the pregnancy. Can anyone here elaborate on what an “unofficial fiancé” is? In my book, you either are or you aren’t engaged. I hope that this relationship with the unofficial fiancé becomes more “official” or that some sort of commitment is made to Ms. Sanchez and her new baby because stability will definitely make a positive difference and will lessen the likelihood of her experiencing unfair comparisons. And I can say that at the end of the day, most women I know, even those who are happily single, would prefer to raise their children with a partner in marriage (either gay or straight).

I think an “unofficial fiance” is similar to a “undocumented American”. Total BS.

Who needs the stability?

the editor needs an editor; revised:
As the Titanic sinks (U.S. econony), focusing on the kind of pattern dress worn by one of the ship hands (the pregnancy of a Latina member of Congress), it seems that you are ringing the S.O.S alarm bells not because the ship has just hit a gigantuan iceberg, but because the flowery dress is not per nominal dress code. The dress code violation amidst the impending trajedy just seems small.
The dress code violation on, say the Queen Mary, may, and I stress this, may make more sense, but it still misses the mark. It turns out the this deck hand (member of congress) happens to be one of the most effective members of the ships staff and is working on vital projects that in fact will turn over to the proper authorities documents laying the ground work for making the case against the ship’s officers, maybe even the previous captain of the ship, laying the ground work for proving intent to commit crimes against the guests on board.
And so again, violation of the dress code is rendered meaningless in the face of her tasks to uncover such crimes.
Congresswoman Linda Sanchez’s pregnancy is nobody’s business except hers and her partner. On behalf of our business, she is carefully, methodically and cautiosly working as a member of the House Judiciary Sub-Committee to collect information on Karl Rove and company paving the way for possible criminal investigation.

And how does this relate to the discussion Anna the Apologist? Or maybe its time to take your medication.

Apologist? Nobody has to apologize for Sanchez. She hasn’t done anything wrong.

I’m with Anna’s argument.
Do any of you actually know Congresswoman Linda?
I do.
Anna, thank you.
