[...] Loretta Sanchez and Nydia Velasquez are two Latina politicians that have disgruntled undocumented students and our families with their refusal to co-sponsor the DREAM Act. They are unresponsive to their constituency. The excuse is that they don’t want ‘piecemeal solutions.’ Is that implying that everyone else who supports us only wants ‘piecemeal solutions?’ Because frankly, it’s a dumb argument against the DREAM Act, which is a no-brainer.
Re: "The DREAM Act has more votes than CIR."

But neither one has enough votes to pass. They won't sponsor it because it would open a whole debate over illegal immigration, and obviously Obama (or Rahm or whoever is in charge) doesn't want any controversy over anything. I know Obama said that he would introduce immigration reform, but I don't believe him. He said whatever he had to say to win.

Considering the economy, this is probably the worst time to bring this up. Furthermore, I really don't think that immigrant rights advocates have made a compelling case as to why there should be immigration reform, specifically legalization. Saying that "they take the jobs that nobody else wants," is not an argument, especially now when citizens are willing to take any jobs they can find.

And anyone who thinks that Obama will be the one to dismantle the core argument of immigration foes, namely that illegal immigrants are criminals, is delusional. Mr. Present will not expend any political capital on this issue or on any issue.

Anna, that was a pretty dumb comment. I hope you go down the districts of CHC members and see that most of the constituents are ethnic minorities, namely Latinos and Asian-Americans and for US, the DREAM Act is an issue, whether we are documented or undocumented. We have families caught up in this situation. People like to pretend that there are strict lines between legal and illegal, when in reality, it is a state constructed and reconstructed phenomena. If you live in a district, you are a constituent of that district.

UCLA students met with Becerra; he fed them the same line as Loretta Sanchez. Given that and the cold shoulder from Luis Gutierrez that some of us have gotten, I am sure that the high ranks of the CHC is behind this, given I know several of them and have been in conversation with them before. It's pretty pathetic but I won't waste my energy on them.

P.S. The DREAM Act has more votes than CIR.

I myself, hold latinos in leadership positions to a higher standard due to the struggles and strives past latinos have allowed all of us here an opportunity to be much better. When I see the neglect of duty from Congressman Lorretta Sanchez or Mayor Villar etc. it tees me off. I will gladly comment my disdain because I expect better from them.

Re: "if you go down the list, you’ll see that none of your conventional, Hispanic politicians have signed on to the DREAM Act. Talk about ignoring your own constituents."

I hate to break this to you, but the people who would benefit from The Dream Act aren't constituents.
Constituents are American citizens who can vote.

My guess is that they won't co-sponsor the Dream Act because they already know that the votes aren't there to pass it.

As for Loretta Sanchez casting her delegate vote for Hillary, there was nothing wrong with that. Hillary was the first viable female candidate for President, and that's who she wanted to cast her vote for.

She wasn't obligated to vote for Obama. I hated the way the delegates were being brow beaten into voting for him. And sadly, the history books are going to show that Hillary had much less support at the convention than she really did.

Xavier Becerra is completely focused on securing the release of convicted criminals from Federal prisons. That’s why he has an above average absentee record in Congress. Luis Gutierrez has been cavorting with Loan Sharks the last several years, and is totally focused on getting legislation passed to double the Vig on those loans to his constituents. He figures if his poverty stricken constituents can’t mustard up donations to his campaign, they might as well give it to the Loan Shark lobby that has been very generous with him.

Well, there are some members of the CHC who are co-sponsors (Grijalva, Roybal-Allard, Serrano, Hinojosa, Gonzalez), and of course some of the Cuban-American members:

http://www.thomas.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d111:1:./temp/~bdVRiC:@@@P|/bss/111search.html|

(if link doesn't work, search under H.R.1751 on Thomas)

Then the usual liberal suspects like Zoe Lofgren, Patrick Kennedy, Henry Waxman, and John Conyers, etc.

But yes, one would think that more of the Hispanic Caucus would be on board with this. It should be a no-brainer. I wonder why Becerra or Gutierrez aren't listed as co-sponsors?
