Latest update on DREAM Activist Walter Lara

July 8th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Last week, I mentioned that Walter Lara, an undocumented young man, was on the verge of deportation. With the coordinated effort of SEIU, DREAM Activists on and off the net, and the letters and appeals on his behalf, Walter Lara has been given another year here in the US.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement offered this, “ICE exercised its authorized discretion” to defer the deportation issue. And Lara’s attorney said, “ICE realized how much the community cared about Walter and that its resources are better spent on bad guys.”

While this small victory for Lara is a relief for pro-migrant activists, we are still reminded of the thousands of other undocumented young people who were brought here as small children and consider the US their home. What kind of society punishes children for the indiscretions of their parents?

So this is a win? When can we enforce the law ? Why does Mr. Lara deserve a better chance than millions of immigrants from around the world?
