Mayor Villaraigosa gets a jump start on Hispanic Heritage Month, while tossing money to Fabian Nuñez

September 7th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Mayor Sam had an interesting blog post that caught my eye last week about Mayor Villaraigosa and Hispanic Heritage Month. It used to be Hispanic Heritage Week, which was initiated by President Johnson back in 1968, and it was subsequently expanded to a month by President Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30 day period from September 15 to October 15. September 15 was selected because it is the independence day of five Latin American countries. And of course, Mexican Independence day is celebrated the next day. Well, Villar couldn’t wait and decided to start the pachanga early with a celebration this past Friday, September 4. I have mixed feelings about these celebrations in tough times, primarily because of the cost, yet I do realize the importance of celebrating Latino heritage. I was struck by Villaraigosa’s eagerness to throw a party when Hispanic Heritage Month doesn’t officially begin until the middle of the month. Why couldn’t he jump the gun on that subway to the sea or something else more substantive?

In other Villaraigosa news, it looks like he has tossed some work to former Assembly Speaker turned lobbyist Fabian Nuñez, to gut the enforcement of a law requiring the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. The irony is that the mayor had established a goal to cut emissions by 2020, as stated in the first paragraph of this piece. This arrangement that Villaraigosa has with the city of Los Angeles DWP and the lobbying firms smells fishy, but the timing seems right since Fabian Nuñez’s son’s murder trial is coming up and will need money for legal bills.

Seriously, I’m a little disappointed…I really enjoy some of the issues we discuss here, but are we really going to discuss this when there are bigger issues happening with the Obama Administration? Health care? CZARs? I’m curious to know if you have any stats on where the American Latino stand on these real issues…lastly, can we give California politics a break, in the end Mayor V is a joke…besides. its not just about LA and or the Golden State!!

The Webmaster has a job and other responsibilities. Sometimes we cannot get around to writing other blog pieces as quickly as we woud like.

So now Latinopoliticsblog.com has to march to the wants and needs and opinions of this brown Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell wannabe? He must think he’s Spanish now. A direct descendant of Hernan Cortes no less.

More Frick and Frack behavior from the very part-time Mayor and his corrupt little friend with the wannabe cholito criminal child. You can bet there’s nothing high minded going on here.

Of course there’s nothing high-minded going on here. We’re talking about Villaraigosa and Fabian Nunez, poster boys for the corrupt Latino politician stereotype award. I am sure Jose Huizar was somewhere, maybe in the closest hiding, making sure his opinion counted for something. I am sure there was nothing of beneficial value to the Angeleno public discussed or transacted here.
