Arizona Governor Janet Brewer signed SB 1070, the bill that many fear will increase racial profiling. You can watch the Governor’s statement below. Notice how she talks about the drug violence south of the border and that which is creeping into our country without mentioning the big cause of this — America’s demand for the narcotics. Illegal immigration and drug violence don’t occur in a vacuum. Brewer also says that she will not tolerate racial discrimination or racial profiling in Arizona, but it will be interesting to see how ‘reasonable suspicion’ of being an undocumented immigrant is defined in practice.
Today President Obama came out with a stern warning about this new Arizona law. Obama also recognized that inaction at the federal level on immigration leads to these kinds of laws at the state level and has pledged to have the Department of Justice look into the legality of this new policy.
The Arizona Hispanic Republicans also issued a statement condemning the new law and indicated that they will not support Janet Brewer this year. I thought that their statement was pretty well reasoned and thoughtful even in holding President Obama accountable for immigration reform. However, I would like to point out that the GOP in the Senate (Graham) has indicated after health care reform passed that they are not interested in immigration so I find it a little disingenuous to place the blame entirely on the President, especially when the GOP had the better half of the last decade to move on immigration reform and didn’t.
If you would like to take action against this new law in Arizona, I encourage you to check out the following websites:

I strongly disagree with Governor Brewer on this new law she has passed. It is against every civil right. It will definitely have a effect on US born Latinos who will be stopped just because of their looks. Stop this injustice. Thank you. El Conde.

Arizona has become the new Mississippi. Look for Arizona to lead the nation in filling up the federal court’s dockets with civil rights violation cases. Look for Arizona to inaugurate kangaroo courts and public lynching. Look for Arizona to lead the nation in unsolved murders, with the vast majority of victims to be human beings of Latino descent. Look for Arizona’s university population to decrease in the next decade. Look for Arizona to break ground on the next Bob Jones University as compensation for dropping attendance at Arizona State and UofA. Look for Arizona to suddenly have a shortage of janitors, gardeners, agricultural workers, dishwashers and busboys, and domestic help. Look for Arizona to be suddenly included into all conversations involving the Bible belt. Look for the Southern Law Poverty Center to open an office in Phoenix. Look for the Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks to relocate.

“she will not tolerate racial discrimination…but…be interested in how ‘reasonable suspicion’ is defined” How is suspicion of someone being an immigrant, with the ignorance of not knowing who they are, considering they are legal citizens not racial discrimination through the practice of profiling? Must our future be part of such disoriented country? Aside from the struggles those in Arizona face, aside from the daily routine, must they include more to their onerous lives?

Richard’s video was interesting, If a woman is willing to risk her life and risk being raped on her journey in to this country, I don’t think SB 1070 will stop her from immigrating into this country through Arizona. SB 1070 will only cost Arizona in the end.

I’m so glad this law finally got passed. It’s about time…Oh did any of you read it? It says “anyone here illegally…” It doesn’t say “only brown colored people…” So shut up with the racism crap. Follow the process of coming here legally like every other immigrant who followed the rules and you won’t have a problem.

Anna, I’m with you Sister! Now is the time for Obama to step up do something about Immigration Reform.
With this new law being passed, Arizona could very well be the start of something big in the U.S.
Hopefully the Obama Administration will stand behind their campaign promises and step in before other states start to implement similar laws.

If you act suspiciously you’ll be treated with suspicion. That applies to people of any color.
If asking me for my ID prevents another American from being murdered, and deporting people who have shown such disrepect for my country then it is a small inconvenience I welcome.
“Racial profiling” has been the steady cry of the left when they have nothing else. It is starting to fall on deaf ears with the passage of Gov Brewer’s bill and all I can say is, it’s about time. I hope other states step up for US citizens where the Fed gov’t has lacked the cajones.

Vam,
You are wrong, I have been a Democrat since I cast my first vote for President for Jimmy Carter. Until Barak Obama came along , I have voted for every Democratic nominee for President.
But when the Democratic party turned their back on Hilary Clinton – I took a close look at Barak Obama and didn’t like what I saw. I saw a person
who rejected a mother who raised him and
canonized a father who abandoned him, all for political and financial gain. Is it surprising now that Obama minimizes what is happening in Arizona and calls it “misguided”? Another Chamberlain ie . ” all is well in our time……”
I will never vote Republican ( I wrote in Hilary Clinton) but I would not vote for Barak Obama
if his re-election was forthcoming. Unlike those in Stockholm, who gave him an undeserved Nobel prize, he will have to earn my vote. The Democratic party needs a real voice and so now may be the time , for some one else to step up to the plate. Perhaps Bill Richardson should run – I have not been a fan of his but I am willing to give him another look.
And Vam, you are right in challenging Justin Brown. Perhaps as you suggest, Mr. Brown would suggest tatooing people with a number like the Germans did to Jews in the concentration camps. How about making Mexican Americans wear a sombrero patch on their clothes like the yellow Jewish star that my husband’s grandparents wore in pre-WWII Poland?
Americans need to let the Democratic party know that unless they force Barak Obama to
fight for civil rights for everyone, including
Mexican-Americans, they cannot count on our support at the polls.

There’s a balance here the rest of you could care less about…most of you don’t live in Az where the problem is now getting in the way of our children’s safety. Maybe it’s because most/some of you don’t have kids, and nor ever will based on life styles? And if you do, you don’t live here where the problem is real.
Either way, we need to balance this BS fear mongering rhetoric about lost civil liberties with realities some of you prefer to not see because it gets in the way of your crazy philosophies/utopia state…or maybe some of you don’t want the impediment of the delivery of weed and coke these illegal’s bring here because it hinders your Fri/Sat swing parties?
Bottom-line: Get a grip; this law is a result of the States taking back the very power granted in the constitution to protect its citizens…something this silly inexperienced President doesn’t have a clue about! Good for Arizona!!

Wow. So much concern for the civil rights of people here illegally. How about the rights of the AZ rancher to tend to his property without being murdered by illegals crossing the Southern border? How about the rights of US citizens who no longer have local hospitals because they went bacnkrupt from all of the illegals sneaking in to get free medical care? How about the rights of all the hardworking, taxpaying legal citizens to keep more of their hard-earned money that’s currently being spent providing services to illegals? How about the rights of all of the American citizens that have been harmed by illegals participating in gangs and committing crimes all over this great nation?
Get real people. I will be happy to show my ID to anyone that wants to see it if it helps solve the current invasion by illegals.

The federal government, and I mean Clinton and Bush, abdicated the responsibilities of their office. Did they really think they could look the other way as 20 million people immigrated here without documents? Did they not consider the ramifications of having so many people here without any protection under the law? It was a civil liberties nightmare waiting to happen, and of course, Americans of Mexican descent will pay the price. Clinton and Bush sold everybody out to the corporations. Why doesn’t Bill Clinton comment on SB 1070? I thought he cared about civil rights?
Now Obama has to deal with this mess in the midst of an economic downturn and in the face of a fascist bill in Arizona. Will he do the right thing? We’ll see.
Even our so-called civil rights groups don’t acknowledge that we are Americans who have more legal rights than people who are here without permission. They won’t even acknowledge that anybody is here without permission. They have intentionally blurred the lines between American citizens of Mexican descent and undocumented workers, and now the Arizona government is eliminating the distinction too. I am so sick of it. “If you act suspiciously you’ll be treated with suspicion. That applies to people of any color.”
Socal 13635, what is suspicous behavior?
“If asking me for my ID prevents another American from being murdered, and deporting people who have shown such disrepect for my country then it is a small inconvenience I welcome.”
My husband’s late grandparents were asked for their ID in pre-WWII Poland were citizens of that country. Their compliance with that law, r granted passage first, to internment in a camp in Warsaw and then onto a train, to a place from which they did not return. My husband’s father is the sole survivor of his parent’s families. A Czech classmate of mine in college, has a father who still bears his tatooed identification number from Auschwitz. At the end of the war, he was the only surviving member of his family.
For all these individuals , the legal requirement for the presentation of their government issued identification because of their “suspicous look” had terrible consequences. Have you forgotten that people who sit in jail are not safe? Lots of people who were wrongly held in jail have been killed by other prisoners.
The solution to securing the southern border of the United States is not
the destruction of our civil liberties.
I am over 50 years old, so Reyfeo – do not think I am making up stories about my personal connection with the effects of Nazism.
Indeed, it is an association I would rather not have. But, sadly racism has always existed.
The world should not forget the example of what can happen, when people wrongly blame
other people for all their problems.

I was looking at SB1070, about 5 minutes ago to see if reasonable suspicion is defined anywhere. It is not. So it makes me wonder how much discretion will be given to police officer’s enforcing this law. What will be the criteria for determining who gets stopped by these officers? This law is obviously targeted towards hispanic immigrants, so will brown skin, speaking spanish, and other traits associated with hispanics be reasonable suspicion? If we are really worried about illegal immigrants, we need to broaden the scope of people being questioned. There are European illegal immigrants, and asian illegal immigrants, and the list goes on. We should all be equal under the law. There’s going to be civil rights concerns if only hispanics are questioned.
24 Miss Karma // Apr 25, 2010 at 1:52 pm
My cousins have sent letters to Arizona State University stating that they will NOT be attending in the fall as they had planned despite receiving partial scholarships. Instead, one is going to attend Lincoln University and his twin brother is going to attend Cornell. Why? Because as young African-Americans they have been down this road of suspicion whether they have worn khakis and a button down shirt or baggy jeans, and they are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
As far as I’m concerned, if you’re not an Oneida, Navajo, Lakota, Ojibway, Creek, etc., then you have NO RIGHT to complain. If you voted for Reagan or Clinton, then you have NO RIGHT to complain. Reagan sticking his nose in Central-American affairs during the 1980s and Clinton’s NAFTA was the catalyst for this supposed mess of illegal immigration. If you shop at Walmart and buy clothes made in the sweatshops of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, or El Salvador, then you have NO RIGHT to complain!
What illegal immigrants have “taken” from U.S. Americans is NOTHING compared to what Bernie Madoff, Enron, Goldman Sachs, and Wall Street have taken from us (and continue to take from us) Can you say Swiss Accounts? I don’t hear a peep from these fleabagging Conservatives about how much those bandits have stolen.
Ralph you are correct, there is NOTHING in this (c)law that defines reasonable suspicion. The amount that AZ taxpayers are paying for illegal immigrants is going to be chump change compared to what will be paid in the civil suits to come. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Anna,
You raised an interesting point regarding the Arizona Diamondbacks. I wonder what the Latino Baseball players are thinking regarding this law, and will they do what they did during the Elian Gonzalez saga which was to refuse to play.
Michaelr, you are also correct. My grandmother said that this Sheriff Joe Arpaio is no different from Bull Connor. This is also the same state that didn’t celebrate the MLK holiday until Public Enemy came out with the song and video “By the Time I Get to Arizona,” so for them to pass a law like such (sadly) doesn’t surprise me at all.
26 Anna // Apr 25, 2010 at 4:14 pm
Re: “There’s going to be civil rights concerns if only hispanics are questioned.”
I think they can ask anyone to pull out either a passport or a birth certificate anywhere, anyplace. I don’t think you have to be in a vehicle. Let’s say they routinely question everybody, and don’t limit it just to brown people. That’s still a police state.
The corporations seem to want that border open no matter what and would rather see our country move to a model of “interior enforcement,” where everybody is questioned based on arbitrary criteria. Of course if you get a police officer who is a birther, he won’t care what kind of documents you have. He’ll think they’re fradulent and have you detained until the federal government can verify that you are an American. Furthermore, those federal detention centers are for-profit, and the government pays them for every person they house, so it’s in their best interest to detain more people. The detention center in Arizona is run by CCA, one of the biggest employers in AZ.
I wonder how many American citizens with brown skin Arizona will round up on election day?
Miss Karma: The owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks is a big donor to the Republican Party who has given them over one million dollars. Anybody who buys a ticket to the Diamondbacks is supporting fascism. He won’t be getting any of my money!

Patrick,
Clearly you and the state of Arizona, do not understand what civil rights mean in the United States of America.
And yes, ask the American Indian if all these descendants of Europeans are here with their permission.
30 Anna // Apr 26, 2010 at 11:26 am
Actually Irma, I originally wrote that. It was late, and I was angry. I know that when people are trying to save their lives, they don’t ask their oppressors for “permission.” That being said, you cannot have 20 million people here without documentation and not think that it will put all of our rights in jeopardy. The system is corrupt.
I don’t believe for one minute that our government could not close the border and halt the flow of immigrants if it wanted to. They need to close the border. I also do not hear any Latino leaders saying that NAFTA should be repealed and the border closed. In fact, they object to anybody who wants to close the border. Why?
The government seems to be moving towards a policy of “internal enforcement,” (police state) in part because they take money from the for-profit detention centers (CCA and Geo Group) that get federal dollars for every person they house, illegal immigrant or not. It’s not in their interest to close the border because more illegal immigrants means more profits. They are going to build these prisons (Reservations) all over the Southwest. They are currently building new ones in Phoenix, and Del Rio, Texas.
Bill Richardson has taken thousands from CCA, so don’t expect him to call for the border to be closed. That loser needs to be voted out, as does anybody who takes money from CCA or the Geo Group and favors for-profit detention centers and prisons.
Is this what you want? Because I don’t want to live in a police state, or in a region where millions of immigrants are “disappeared,” in for-profit detention centers. That’s what the current system has brought us. It’s all corrupt.
What saddens me is that our people, even our so-called leaders, are willing to accept this kind of treatment. They need to protest much more than SB 1070.

Most recent Office for Homeland Security estimates indicate that about 1/3rd of the illegals in this country arrived here legally(ie student visas, visitor visas, work visas). Those Visas’ times ran out, and those illegals continue to stay here. Why do we not do anything about them? Most are from European, Australian, Middle Eastern countries. Why are we not concerned about them? By the way, most of the 9-11 terrorists were in this country on those type of expired visas, not people who crossed the border to work and find a better life for themselves not to commit acts of terror. I hope that when cooler heads and reason prevail that we have immigration reform with a path to citizenship for those already here who have worked hard , paid taxes and made a better life and contributed to society. Our immigration laws should be made tougher with reasonable and enforceable visit and work requirements.

First of all there is no concrete evidence that the rancher in AZ was killed by an illegal alien. What is being reported is that the rancher’s last words were “illegal alien”. Who is to say that was not made up??? Then there were foot steps leading back to Mexico! People please!!! What BS is that. What happened to innocent until proven guilty??? Who is to say this was not made up by some racist individual who wanted to get the attention of the Feds? Maybe this was a racist effort to start a movement just like the one we are living now. Answer this question.
Who is more American an illegal who pays his/her taxes and helps the economy by working their a$$ off or a legal citizen who does nothing but live off the gov.
Average welfare child is white, has one sibling and unmarried mother, gov’t statistics show
Contrary to popular belief, there are more White children on welfare than Black children, according to statistics from the Census Bureau and Department of Health and Human Services.
Nearly 9 million children on welfare in 1995 were White, the statistics show, compared to 4.8 million Black children.
The typical child on Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) is White and lives in the rural South, Appalachia or the downtrodden areas of major cities.
The statistics also show that the average child on welfare is 7 years old, his mother is 29 and single, and the child has one brother or sister.
Their welfare parent qualifies for only the lowest-paying jobs in the workforce.
Despite prevailing stereotype, Whites, not Blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars
SAY the word “welfare” and immediately the image of the lazy Black wellare queen who breeds for profit surfaces in the minds of those who have come to believe the hideous stereotype. It is a myth that persists despite government figures and authoritative studies showing that Whites overwhelmingly reap the lion’s share of the dole.
The image of the Black “welfare cheat,” public aid advocates say, is based on misconceptions about poor minorities. The notion, they say, comes from society’s resentment of seemingly ablebodied people getting paid for doing nothing.
It’s clear that welfare has a Black face,” says Dr. Mary Frances Berry, chairperson of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. “Whenever you see television or news shows about welfare, only occasionally will they show someone who is not African-American,” she says. “The assumption is that when you speak of welfare, you’re speaking of Black people.” The facts, however, reveal an entirely different picture that underscores the difference between the rhetoric that would have one believe that most welfare recipients are Black and the reality that the majority of them are White.

Now that I look at the list of names I gave and having read a couple of other pages, I believe the opinions here seem divided nearly in half. The Nuremberg Laws were well known at that time to all judges and attorneys. Today they are thought of as criminal. The Jews were placed outside of the German community because of the laws. This was indeed wrong, as I now know, but at the time it was the law of the land. In an official discussion with the Gauleiter Grohé after a bombing attack, I learned that the Jews were to move out of their homes to make space for people who had been bombed out of theirs. The Jews were then given lodgings in the fortress in Müngersdorf. After this time, an order came from Heydrich that they were to be evacuated.

Those of you who have not read the bill should, this is the link http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf. All it really does is give the police the obligation to enforce the federal laws that are already in place.
I know many Mexican people who are here illegally, some are very hard working and honest. If this were true of 80%, I doubt anyone would have said a thing. Unfortunatley, among those that I know, they seem to be the minority.
I know many who take advantage of welfare, foodstamps, state medical and WIC while not reporing their income. I even know some who came to the US just before having a baby so that they could take advantage of these services.
Maybe this bill is not the best answer but something must be done. If you read it, you will see that most of what the media has reported is written by biased indivduals who have not read the bill and are quoting others, like Obama, who have not read it either.

This law is totally legit. Aren’t we a nation of laws? Mexico has laws, they enforce them, the problem is when ur the minority ur always gonna think there is some ulterior motive, get used to it, its a democratic process, the majority wants to get this situation checked, what the hell is so hard to understand that?

You have nothing to fear if your legal. Mexico’s immagration laws are far more punitive. Every race of people on earth have been conquored. Fix your own country. It will take freedom loving honest people to do that. I dought your people have it in them, you want somthing for nothing.

i think that the horrible old looking governor of Arizona jan brewer is a scarycat if she was an illegal person just like the ones she’s taking out of the states she would be so scared. i think we americans need to know who we are and from where we come from cause nobody has the right to be treated that way. sometimes i hate myself for being an american cause we are the ones that have ruin the whole world. we are the ones who cause animals to die from like the gulf of mexico it isn’t our gulf or do you see the words A.m.e.r.i.c.a.n.s in the name no then why do you go on someone else;s property too and how come jan brewer is doing this just right now why couldn’t she done it before i think that we need to remember that this is not american soil that this is our soil not only american living thing in the world has the right to go anywhere they want to go without permission GOD didn’t made this land only for humans and for americas GOD built it for animals from all over the world and every living thing that wants to step on dry land so i’m gonna say what i really think about jan brewer or should i say MRS.
