The GOP makes another push for Latino Votes

December 4th, 2010 · 3 Comments

The GOP is obviously reading the demographic writing on the wall in attempting to broaden its outreach to Latinos. And we have seen this on the media side of things with Newt Gingrich’s launch of The Americano website last year, and now with the Heritage Foundation’s new Spanish language site. This past week, Gingrich’s Americano hosted a forum to discuss Latino outreach.

All of this is fine and dandy, yes, the GOP should concentrate on Latino outreach, but I find it all rather disingenuous when so many in the GOP who are in a position to do something about immigration reform are opposed to the DREAM Act. This comes at a time when a recent poll showed immigration taking over other issues in terms of priority for Latino voters.

And the GOP faces a similar hurdle with the expiring unemployment benefits, especially when Latino unemployment is still higher than the national average.

Winning favor with the Latino community, especially those of us in the Southwestern states and in the Northeast, is going to be hard, but I’m interested in what the Republican Party will do (if anything at all) to temper some of its heated rhetoric that many feel targets our people.

It’s simple politics really: They are not targeting “Latinos” as one big block. They are targeting specific Latinos, particularly those with a conservative bent.

You don’t need a majority of Latinos to be political competitive, just enough to neutralize their support for the Democrats.
