Following up on the Claudia Alvarez remarks that have garnered much outrage, the Santa Ana City Council has condemned her statement in a meeting yesterday. And Alvarez offered another apology. Also worth noting is the public support for Alvarez at the meeting. Gustavo Arellano has some insight about the context of the support Alvarez has received in the past from developers who were pursuing projects similar to that of Mr. Chase, who was the target of the Hitler remarks. At this point, it doesn’t seem like Alvarez is going to resign; so moving forward, she will have to demonstrate the sincerity of her apology and whether she will truly push back on gentrification efforts even if that means turning down campaign funds and support from those who have backed her in previous elections.
